Overview

The Council recognizes the importance of training mental health and social service providers, addiction counselors and other professionals on the issue of problem gambling.

This problem gambling specific training and education will assist professionals in providing high-quality, consistent and appropriate levels of service to problem gamblers and their families.

Attention Program Managers, Counselors and Treatment Providers

In August 2003, the State of California's Welfare and Institutions Code was amended to create the Office of Problem Gambling within the Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs which will support treatment services for California residents suffering from Problem and Pathological gambling.

The Council is offering clinical training on problem gambling assessment and treatment in a four-part comprehensive workshop.

Objectives

Assist employers/employees in assessment and treatment of problem/compulsive gamblers.

Certification Information (CCGC)

Curriculum

Thirty hours of intensive, in-classroom training in six areas:

Treatment strategies and a comprehensive review for the National Castle Gambling Counselor exam.

Clinical Professionals - who want our California Certified Gambling Counselor credential.

Reciprocity - CCPG will accept certification by other states or national organizations if their requirements are equal or greater than for CCGC.

Certification Requirements

Level I: California Certified Gambling  Counselor-Intern

Curriculum Vitae.

30 hours gambling specific training including: Overview of Problem Gambling; Counseling Families; Legal, Financial and Criminal Issues; Multi-cultural/Diversity Issues; Specialized Issues e.g. Sports betting, Internet and casino gambling, Employee Assistance Programs; Treatment Strategies and a comprehensive review for a national exam.

300 hours of related training or education (e.g. psychology, sociology, chemical dependency, counseling, social work, etc.) Attach transcripts or certificates of completion.

Sign ethics statement.

Sign agreement that they are in good standing with their primary licensing/certification board. If there are any current or past legal actions, attach copies of disposition.

Attend 10 12-Step meetings; some GA and some GamAnon. Attach written documentation.

Submit 3 letters of recommendation from Mental Health Professionals.

100 hours supervised work hours specifically with gamblers or their families in individual, group or family therapy sessions, assessments, interventions, lectures/educational sessions, treatment planning sessions with team etc. (A maximum of 25 of the 100 hours can be done with family members of gamblers.) A "day to day supervisor in the counseling/clinical setting" must supervise all of these 100 hours. At least 50 of these hours must be from a Board or state approved clinical supervisor/consultants qualified to supervise gambling counseling activities. Attach written documentation.

Take and pass the CCPG's overview exam.

Level II: California Certified Gambling Counselor

All of the CCGC Intern requirements plus:

30 additional hours of gambling specific education (for a total of 60). Attach documentation.

Current certification or licensure in a related mental health field: CCGC, CADC, CAS, LCSW, MFT, PhD, MD. Attach documentation.

Pass National Gambling Examination. Attach documentation. 

bullet

Minimum 2000 hours (one year full time equivalent) supervised work hours specifically with gamblers or their families in individual, group or family therapy sessions, assessments, interventions, lectures/educational sessions, treatment planning sessions with team etc. These hours must be from a Board or state approved clinical supervisor/consultants qualified to supervise gambling counseling activities. *Initially we allow some distant supervision via phone or travel until we have enough supervisors in California. National certification requires that consultants/supervisors have Bachelors or Masters degrees, maintains other certification or license, and is current with CGC requirements; 3 years demonstrated experience in supervision; have demonstrated expertise in the content area of pathological gambling and be approved by the National Gambling Counselor Certification Board. Attach written documentation.

Renewal of Certification
